Room for the Nile Crocodile is an installation developed in the 1970's. It was featured at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London in 1980 as part of the exhibition Art and the Sea.

plan

"In 1979 I visited the Indian Ocean, making studies of the extinction of species in its islands. In particular I was interested in the demise of the nile crocodile, which until 200 years ago stood at the head of the food chain.Within two days of returning to England I was aboard a hundred year-old square-rigged sailing ship in the Irish Sea in rough weather. Encased in the creaking skeleton of this extinct relic of the seas, I began to connect the forms of the islands' animals with the forms of the ship, and the ensuing vision of the Room for the Nile Crocodile was born."
